Classes went on as normal. The faculty kept the second body a secret and they had Mika sign a non-disclosure. No one else but their small group was the wiser.

Mika improved in her hunter class quicker than Bartholomew expected thanks to her practices every day with Audrey and Malachi.

Team Black had some newbies on it that Mika knew could cause issues. They had a lot of work to do as the scrimmages proved. Players were knocked into the water left and right – including Mika thanks to her inability to shield.

So far no one had found the killer among the students and faculty.

Hunter had sent over the information about the body they’d found. Mika didn’t know whether to feel relieved or uneasy that this one had been a low born witch – not human.

There was nothing else to connect it to the previous murder except the way the organs had been harvested. Mika had been reading every book she could in her spare time and still she couldn’t figure out which spell this person was trying to perform.

A disturbing amount of blood spells required organs. The fact that the organs harvested were witch and not hunter or say, human, didn’t narrow it down either. But whatever it was – it was going to be big.

Mika had read enough over the last two weeks to know that most blood spells didn’t need much more than a few drops of blood – maybe an animal sacrifice, or a drop of blood from a demon. Very rarely did a spell call for human blood as it didn’t possess any power of its own.

So most of the time an animal was just as good as a human.

Mika tried not to think about that too much. Audrey was already sensitive to the way the paranormal world viewed humans as she’d grown up with them.

Midterms were coming up and despite still dealing with her block, Mika felt ready. The classes were easy enough – as long as she didn’t have to perform any magic. There were a few possibilities despite all her classes being theory, but Mika’s grades were good and she could afford some bad marks.

Audrey’s Latin and Sumerian were nearly perfect thanks to Mika and Hunter. The rest of her classes she didn’t need Mika’s help with.

Ostara and spring break were coming up soon. Their midterms would be the week before so all witches could go home for the vernal equinox if they wished.

Mika wanted to find the killer before then.

Every single day she spent her breaks between classes with Ethan until dodgeball practice. Things hadn’t really changed since they’d…gotten physical. There was still a lot of real life shit to deal with, but they found small moments to spend together.

Every day that went by, Mika was more confident she wanted Ethan to be her first. He was gentle with her, understanding, and accepting. That calm that attracted her to him in the first place was something she knew hid a chaos underneath that she didn’t quite understand yet.
